Biography

Deniz Göktürk is a distinguished professor in the Department of German at the University of California, Berkeley. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy from Freie Universität Berlin in 1995, where his dissertation focused on literary and cinematic imaginations of America in early twentieth-century German culture. Following this, he worked as a certified translator for Turkish law courts, hospitals, and publishers for several years. Göktürk held a full-time teaching appointment at the University of Southampton in the UK, serving in the School of Modern Languages and the Film Program from 1995 to 2001. He joined the Department of German at Berkeley in the fall of 2001 and has since served as a graduate adviser and department chair. His contributions include receiving various grants and awards from institutions such as the DAAD and the Economic and Social Sciences Research Council in the UK. He has participated in numerous cross-campus collaborations and has co-founded TRANSIT, an electronic journal launched by the Berkeley German Department in 2005. His research interests encompass cultural media studies with a focus on moving images, multilingual literature, migration theories, and social interactions within an aesthetic framework on a global scale.
