Biography

A recognized leader in fusion research, Professor Dennis G. Whyte's work focuses on magnetic confinement plasmas and sets an innovative and faster path for producing fusion energy. He has published over 380 articles encompassing a wide range of fusion science and technology, and he is a leader in the SPARC project, which is a collaboration with Commonwealth Fusion Systems. This initiative aims to design and build a high-field fusion device to demonstrate net energy production at a commercial scale. The technology approaches underpinning the high-field fusion energy effort, known as SPARC, have formed over a decade at MIT, focusing on utilizing high-temperature superconductors, radio-frequency heating, demountable magnets for modular assembly and maintenance, and liquid immersion blankets for robust energy removal. Professor Whyte is a fellow of the American Physical Society and has served on committees for the National Academies and the Royal Society. His accolades include the Fusion Power Associates Leadership Award and the Nuclear Fusion Prize. He previously held positions as the Department Head of Nuclear Science and Engineering and as the Director of the Plasma Science & Fusion Center at MIT.
