Biography

Deok-Ho Kim is a Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. He received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 2010, and holds a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Seoul National University. In 1998, he obtained his Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Pohang University of Science and Technology. His research interests span across various interdisciplinary fields including stem cell engineering, tissue engineering, organs-on-chips, mechanobiology, biomaterials, biomedical devices, and nanobiotechnology. He employs multi-scale biofabrication techniques, integrating human pluripotent stem cell technologies to develop bio-inspired materials and devices for functional tissue engineering models. His work aims to elucidate regenerative biology and advance drug screening and disease modeling, with a focus on cell-based therapies. Kim studies the mechanisms of tumor progression and metastasis, tissue repair and regeneration, as well as developmental events through engineered microenvironments and quantitative biology approaches. The ultimate aim of his research is to understand complex cellular behavior in response to microenvironmental cues in normal, aging, and disease states. This research seeks to provide new mechanistic insights to control cell and tissue structure/function and to develop multi-scale regenerative technologies that improve human health.
