Dr. Derek Armitage

Biography

Derek Armitage is a Professor and Director at the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability at the University of Waterloo. His interdisciplinary research focuses on supporting communities and partners in the sustainable management of oceans, coasts, and fisheries within the context of social-ecological change. He emphasizes co-management, adaptive governance, community-based conservation, and resilience approaches. Derek co-leads the Vulnerability to Viability Global Partnership for Small-Scale Fisheries and serves as Vice-Chair of the Integrated Marine Biosphere Research program (SCOR/Future Earth), where he is also a coordinating chapter lead author for the World Ocean Assessment. His editorial contributions include co-editing books such as 'Adaptive Co-Management: Collaboration, Learning Multi-Level Governance' and 'Governance of Coastal Commons.' Additionally, he serves as an editor for journals including Conservation Science Practice and Earth Stewardship and Ocean Coastal Management.
