Derek Brueckner is a visual artist and art educator whose recent work encompasses video harvested from socially collaborative unscripted performances. Using a multidisciplinary practice that includes drawing, painting, live feed projections, and performance video, he re-inscribes and re-imagines human figure collaborators’ processes through improvisation and facilitated play. His performance projects function as live public laboratory spaces, where performers utilize installations as a platform for their own work while adapting the context, ideas, and metaphors to create a separate narrative. This approach allows multiple platforms to coexist within a larger work, fostering a unified space for contributions to thinking, sharing, and expressing. Brueckner's work continues to combine aspects of process, resulting in edited videos that reference the labor of making, experimentation, and social improvisation while honoring the inventive minds and bodies of the performers. He has participated in artist residencies in Italy, Vermont, Brooklyn, New Orleans, and Toronto, and has showcased his solo exhibitions and participatory projects in various arts spaces. Additionally, he co-hosts an arts talk radio show on CKUW 95.9 FM and has received grants from both the Manitoba Arts Council and Winnipeg Arts Council.
