Biography

Derek Elsworth is the G. Albert Shoemaker Chair Professor in Energy Mineral Engineering and Geosciences at Penn State University. He is a co-founder of the Center for Geomechanics, Geofluids, and Geohazards. His expertise spans several fields including rock mechanics, groundwater hydrology, and mathematical modeling. His research interests include the mechanical transport characteristics of fractured rocks, applications of geothermal energy, and deep geological sequestration of radioactive wastes and CO2. Additionally, he investigates unconventional hydrocarbons such as coal-gas and tight-gas-shales hydrates, as well as instability and eruption dynamics of volcanoes. Elsworth teaches numerous courses related to fluid mechanics, energy society, and geo-environmental systems, among others. He is involved in ongoing research and continues to contribute to the academic community through publications and mentorship.
