Biography

Derek Jinks joined the University of Texas School of Law faculty in the Fall of 2005. His research teaching interests encompass public international law, international humanitarian law, human rights law, and criminal law. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas in 1991, an M.A. and M.Phil. in sociology from Yale University in 1998 and 1999 respectively, and a J.D. from Yale Law School in 1998. Jinks has clerked for Judge William C. Canby, Jr. on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and worked at the Prosecutor's Office of the International Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia. He has also served as a Senior Legal Advisor to a United Nations Representative in South Asia and worked with the Human Rights Documentation Centre in India. Jinks was part of the U.S. delegation to the International Service for Human Rights during the Rome conference that established the permanent International Criminal Court. In 2006, he became a member of the U.S. Secretary of State's Advisory Committee on International Law. He has authored works such as "Rules of War: Geneva Conventions in the Age of Terror" (forthcoming Oxford University Press 2008) and "International Humanitarian Law" (forthcoming Oxford University Press 2009, with Ryan Goodman).
