Biography

Derek Jinks is the A.W. Walker Centennial Chair at the University of Texas School of Law and a Senior Fellow at the Robert S. Strauss Center for International Security Law. His research and teaching interests encompass public international law, international humanitarian law, international criminal law, human rights law, and criminal law. He previously held the position of Charles H. Stockton Professor of International Law at the U.S. Naval War College from 2009 to 2010. Jinks has an extensive educational background with a B.A. in anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin, an M.A. and M.Phil. in sociology from Yale University, and a J.D. from Yale Law School. Before embarking on his academic career, he clerked for Judge William C. Canby, Jr. on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, worked at the Prosecutor's Office of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, and served as a Senior Legal Advisor for the United Nations Representative for South Asia's Human Rights Documentation Centre in India. He also contributed to the delegation at the International Service for Human Rights during the Rome conference that established the permanent International Criminal Court. From 2006 to 2021, Jinks was a member of the U.S. Secretary of State's Advisory Committee on International Law.
