Dr. Derek Suderman

Biography

Derek Suderman is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies and Theological Studies at Conrad Grebel University College, University of Waterloo. With a robust academic background including degrees from Canadian Mennonite University, the University of Waterloo, Brock University, and University of St. Michael’s College, Suderman is an accomplished Hebrew Bible/Old Testament scholar. His research interests encompass a diverse range of topics, including the Psalms, lament, the dynamics of prophets, and the ethical implications of violence within biblical texts. Suderman delves into the historical and cultural contexts that shape biblical interpretation and encourages students to engage critically with their own beliefs through the lens of scripture. His work frequently addresses the use of the Bible in the context of violence, particularly in relation to Indigenous peoples and contemporary issues. Suderman has shared his insights through numerous publications and conference presentations across five continents. He is actively involved in both undergraduate and graduate programs, teaching various courses on Old Testament studies and facilitating discussions on the intersection of faith and ethics.
