Derfogail Delcassian is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of California Berkeley. His research focuses on biomaterials and nanotechnology, particularly in the development of immunoengineering technologies that direct immune cell functions. His work includes building artificial lymph nodes and creating mRNA vaccines as well as studying and controlling immune cell behavior. These technologies have applications in cancer therapy, inducing transplant tolerance, and addressing autoimmune diseases, as well as potential implications for spaceflight. He obtained his PhD in Materials from the Faculty of Engineering at Imperial College London in 2014 and a Master in Chemistry from the University of York in 2010. Before joining UC Berkeley, he served as a Senior Research Fellow at the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT from 2016 to 2021, and was also an ETERM and Marie Curie Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham.
