Biography

Desen Kirli is an Elizabeth Georgeson Fellow and a researcher at the School of Engineering, University of Edinburgh. His ambition is to bridge the gap between academic research and its implementation in industry, particularly to accelerate the decarbonization of energy systems. Desen's research focuses on data-driven digital smart grid solutions, incorporating advanced technologies such as digital twin modeling, smart contracting, and artificial intelligence for developing niche market mechanisms and local energy markets for flexibility trading. Before his fellowship, he worked on the EPSRC DISPATCH Project, which explored multi-vector net zero heating and cooling solutions. He holds an award-winning Master of Engineering degree and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh, focusing on peer-to-peer trading flexibility in local energy systems. He has been recognized with the Scottish Renewables Young Professionals Green Energy Award for his PhD project centered on the bottom-up decarbonization of smart local energy systems.
