Dr. Desmond King

Biography

Desmond King is the Andrew Mellon Professor of American Government and a Professorial Fellow at Nuffield College, University of Oxford. As an Emeritus Fellow at St John's College, he has had a distinguished academic career focusing on various aspects of political science. His degrees include a PhD from Northwestern University and a DLitt from the University of Oxford, alongside a BA from Trinity College Dublin. King’s research interests encompass comparative government, public policy, and racial inequality within the framework of American political development. He has received several accolades, including the David Minar Dissertation Award and recognition as a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, the British Academy, and the Academy of Social Sciences. Additionally, King has served as President of the Politics & History Section of the American Political Science Association and has been involved with notable institutions such as the Max Planck-Sciences Po Centre in Paris and NYU School of Law's Straus Institute for the Advanced Study of Law & Justice. His publications, including the award-winning “House Divided: Race Politics in Obama's America,” reflect his expertise in the intersection of race, politics, and policy within American society.
