Biography

Desmond Lawler earned his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1980 and joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin that same year. He was named a University Distinguished Teaching Professor in 1997 and received the A.P. Black Award in 1999 for his significant and sustained research contributions to drinking water quality by the American Water Works Association, North America's primary professional organization focused on improving drinking water supply. Lawler's research includes experimental and mathematical approaches for studying physical-chemical treatment processes for drinking water, wastewater, and industrial process water. His work primarily focuses on the removal of particles using modern membrane processes and conventional methods such as flocculation, settling, and granular media filtration.
