Dr. Desmond Whalen

Biography

Desmond Whalen is a Clinical Assistant Professor in Emergency Medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland, holding a joint appointment in Family Medicine. With a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biology Neurosciences, he later obtained his Medical Degree from Memorial University. After completing his residency in Family Medicine in 2019 and Emergency Medicine Residency in 2020, Dr. Whalen actively practices full-time in emergency medicine, integrating prenatal care for low-risk obstetric deliveries. His impressive administrative credentials include roles as Clinical Chief for Category B Rural Emergency Medicine and Vice President of Medical Services (acting) at Central Health. He has a strong commitment to medical education, mentoring both undergraduate and postgraduate learners through clinical teaching in the emergency department. Dr. Whalen’s research predominantly focuses on rural medicine and innovative simulation methodologies to enhance recruitment and retention in rural healthcare. He is also involved in various organizational roles, such as Vice-Chair of the Chapter Advisory Board for Make-A-Wish Newfoundland and Labrador, and a member of the Board of Directors for the Labrador Island Link Operating Corporation. Desmond has received several accolades for his contributions to the medical field, including the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame Award and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal.
