Dr. Despina Kontos

Biography

Despina Kontos is a Professor of Radiology at Columbia University. With expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data analytics, she has focused her research on multi-modality imaging data. As the vice chair of artificial intelligence in data science research within the Department of Radiology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, she also serves as the director of biomarker imaging at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Kontos is the founding director of the Columbia University’s Center for Innovation in Imaging Biomarkers and Integrated Diagnostics (CIMBID), which is dedicated to developing and integrating quantitative imaging and non-imaging biomarkers for personalized disease prediction, particularly in the field of cancer. Her contributions to the field include leveraging artificial intelligence tools for risk prediction in breast and lung cancer. Kontos’ work emphasizes the investigation of how imaging and quantitative biomarkers can enhance cancer screening, prognostication, and treatment. A notable aspect of her research is the development of innovative computational methodologies to investigate novel cancer phenotypic biomarkers through imaging, leading to the personalization of cancer care. Furthermore, her research extends to lung cancers, focusing on the integration of CT radiomic features with liquid biopsy data. With over 100 publications in high-impact journals, Kontos is recognized nationally for her lectures and contributions. She has received numerous grants from various federal agencies and private foundations in support of her work.
