Biography

Detlef Lohse studied physics at the Universities of Kiel and Bonn in Germany and received his PhD from the University of Marburg in 1992. He subsequently joined the University of Chicago as a postdoctoral researcher and completed his habilitation at Marburg in 1997. In 1998, he became Chair at the University of Twente in the Netherlands, where he established the Physics of Fluids group, which is recognized as a leader in the field on a global scale. He became a member of the Max Planck Society in 2015 and was involved in founding the Max Planck Center at Twente for Complex Fluid Dynamics in 2016. Lohse's research spans the realms of fluid dynamics, soft matter physics, with a focus on turbulence, turbulent heat and mass transport, multiphase flow, and micro- and nanofluidics. He employs experimental, theoretical, and numerical methods to address both fundamental questions and applied science problems. Over the course of his career, he has published more than 720 papers in peer-reviewed journals and supervised 118 PhD students, many of whom now hold prominent academic positions worldwide. Lohse has received several prestigious awards including the Max Planck Medal for theoretical physics in 2019, the Balzan Prize in 2018 for contributions to fluid dynamics, and the Spinoza Prize from NWO in 2005. He has also been recognized as a Fellow of the American Physical Society and became a member of various academies such as the National Academy of Engineering and the Dutch Academy of Sciences.
