Biography

Devaraj Basavarajappa is a Senior Research Fellow at Macquarie Medical School, Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences. His research focuses on uncovering the mechanisms of neurodegeneration, neuroinflammation, and optic neuropathies through trans-synaptic neurodegeneration in the brain, utilizing a range of degenerative animal models. His primary aim is to redefine the understanding of neurodegenerative diseases affecting the retina and visual pathway, with a focus on cellular signaling, cell death pathways, microRNAs, and neuroinflammatory processes. He received his PhD from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research laboratory in India. Basavarajappa has extensive research experience in vision neuroscience and inflammation, which he gained during his work at the Dean McGee Eye Institute in the USA and a Nobel Prize-winning laboratory at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.
