Dr. Devi Mucina

Biography

Devi Mucina is an Associate Professor specializing in Indigenous Governance at the University of Victoria. Mucina received a PhD from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, where the focus was on Sociology and Equity Studies. Mucina's academic interests encompass Indigenous African philosophies and the decolonization of Indigenous masculinities, notably exploring areas such as Indigenous fathering and other-fathering practices through the lens of Ubuntu oralities and disability studies. Current research projects investigate how Indigenous men's associations can nurture relational health and promote decolonizing masculinities across diverse geographic contexts including Africa, Turtle Island (North America), and Oceania. Mucina’s work addresses critical questions surrounding the impact of incarceration on Indigenous families and children's futures, utilizing an intersectional theoretical framework to analyze these issues. With numerous publications across journals and books, Mucina's contributions to the field enrich the discourse on Indigenous knowledge and practices, particularly in the areas of social work, education, and environmental governance.
