Biography

Devin Michelle Bunten is an Associate Professor in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Her research interests focus on gentrification and segregation, racial capitalism, and urban theory, particularly in relation to neighborhoods. She writes on topics concerning queerness and transness, and her contributions have been published in prominent outlets such as The New York Times and CityLab. At MIT, Professor Bunten teaches various courses including Planning Economics, Housing and Social Stratification in the United States, and Housing and Racial Capitalism. She has previously worked as an economist at the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, DC. Bunten obtained her PhD in economics from UCLA in 2016, her MA from Colorado State University in 2010, and her BA in film studies from the University of Colorado-Denver in 2005. Additionally, she helped co-found the group Abundant Housing Los Angeles, which focuses on organizing housing production in the Los Angeles region.
