Biography

Devin Terhune joined the Department of Psychology at King's College London in 2022 as a Reader (Associate Professor). He completed his BA in Philosophy and Psychology at Concordia University, Canada, followed by an MSc in Psychology with distinction from the University of Liverpool, and a PhD in Psychology at Lund University, Sweden. Before joining King's, he lectured in statistics and coding in the Department of Psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London. Terhune's research primarily focuses on the intersection of experimental psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and cognitive neuropsychiatry. His current interests include the modulation of awareness and perception, particularly in the context of altered states such as hallucinations. He leads the Awareness & Modulation Lab, investigating how verbal suggestions can influence awareness within various contexts including hypnosis and the placebo/nocebo effect. His lab conducts experimental work on dissociative states and has a specific interest in understanding the neurocognitive profiles of individuals responsive to verbal modulation.
