Dr. Devorah Baum

Biography

Devorah Baum is a Professor of English Literature at the University of Southampton. Her research interests encompass a diverse array of subjects including marriage through the lenses of literature, memoir, film, art, psychoanalysis, and feminist philosophy. She is recognized for her significant contributions to the field, with publications such as 'Marriage' (2023), which blends serious research with creative elements, and 'Feeling Jewish' (2017), which explores themes of identity and feelings within modern Jewish experiences. Baum co-directed the documentary feature 'The New Man' (2016) and the subsequent film 'Husband' (2023), both of which deal with complex societal issues including gender and identity. Additionally, her anthology, co-edited with Stephen Frosh, 'Routledge International Handbook of Psychoanalysis and Jewish Studies' (2025), further exemplifies her research breadth. Baum is actively engaged in teaching at various levels, supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students, and has taken on editorial roles, including at Granta Magazine.
