Dr. Devraj Basu

Biography

Devraj Basu, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.S, is an Associate Professor of Otorhinolaryngology: Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a surgeon-scientist focused on improving the curative abilities against aggressive head and neck cancers while mitigating the side effects of existing therapies. His research involves analyzing the heterogeneity and phenotypic plasticity of malignant cells and their interaction with the stromal microenvironment. He aims to develop molecular definitions of epigenetic plasticity that enable tumor cells to maintain their malignant potential even when subjected to standard therapies. By exploiting the intra-tumor diversity, he seeks to enhance the effectiveness of targeted therapies for head and neck cancers. In clinical practice, he manages complex head and neck cancer cases, utilizing advanced techniques, including open, endoscopic, robotic, and laser procedures. His expertise encompasses a range of cancer types including HPV-related cancers, squamous cell carcinomas, and thyroid cancers among others. Furthermore, he is involved in NIH-funded research aimed at integrating molecular insights into surgical cancer care, thereby advancing the science of cancer therapy.
