Dr. Dexter Irvine

Biography

Professor Dexter Irvine is an Emeritus Professor at the School of Psychological Sciences at Monash University, where he holds a part-time appointment. He is also a Professorial Research Fellow at the Bionic Ear Institute. His primary research interests focus on the functional organization and plasticity of the auditory system, particularly in the context of cochlear implants and auditory cortex in profoundly and severely deaf animals. He is actively involved in research exploring auditory system plasticity and auditory perceptual learning, as well as the processing mechanisms related to auditory inputs. With a significant number of outputs and ongoing projects, Professor Irvine has contributed extensively to the field of auditory neuroscience, emphasizing the neuronal basis of primate auditory perception and the processing of social communication calls in primate auditory cortex. His research has implications for understanding auditory processing and enhancing cochlear implant outcomes in individuals with hearing impairments.
