Biography

Diana Fu is an associate professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto and a fellow at renowned institutions such as the Brookings Institution and the Wilson Center. Her research focuses on popular contention, repression, civil society, and authoritarian citizenship in contemporary China. Fu is currently co-authoring a book that examines how the Chinese state governs the global diaspora, which is under contract with Cambridge University Press. She is known for her book, 'Mobilizing Without the Masses: Control and Contention in China', published in 2018, which has won several book awards from the American Political Science Association and the American Sociological Association. Fu's expert commentary has been featured in major news outlets, including BBC, Bloomberg, CNN, and NPR. She also hosts a documentary series on TVO about China and participates in dialogues on Canada-China and U.S.-China relations. Fu received her doctorate in Politics from Oxford University, where she was a Rhodes Scholar and was elected a member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College.
