Biography

Diane S. Lauderdale is the Chair of the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Chicago and a Louis Block Distinguished Service Professor. Her research focuses on how behavioral and social factors influence health, with recent work dedicated to sleep as a behavioral risk factor. She has conducted studies examining the perception of sleep duration and disruptions in relation to objective sleep measures. Notably, her work has uncovered significant racial and socioeconomic disparities in sleep health among middle-aged adults. Lauderdale has also studied health outcomes among immigrants in the United States, exploring the impact of pre-immigration circumstances and social determinants on late-life health. In light of the challenges faced by specific populations, she has highlighted the effects of stress and discrimination on birth outcomes, notably among Arab American women during the post-9/11 era. As a director, she leads the University's new Master of Public Health program, designed for clinical professionals aiming to advance their expertise in clinical epidemiology and health services research.
