Biography

Dianne K. Newman is a Professor of Environmental Science and Engineering at the California Institute of Technology. She holds the title of Gordon M. Binder/Amgen Professor and serves as a Merkin Institute Professor. Newman completed her Bachelor of Arts at Stanford University in 1993 and earned her PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1997. She began her academic career as Clare Booth Luce Assistant Professor at Caltech from 2000 to 2005, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2005, and became a full Professor in 2006. In 2016, she was appointed as the Binder/Amgen Professor and later held the Davis Leadership Chair from 2017 to 2020. Newman has also been a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator from 2005 to 2016 and served as Executive Officer from 2017 to 2023. Her research interests include electron transfer biofilm physiology, photosynthesis, respiration based iron and/or arsenic, and intra- and extracellular biomineralization.
