Biography

Dick Douwes is a Professor of Global History at Erasmus University Rotterdam. He has held various academic positions, including serving as the dean of the Erasmus School of History, Culture, and Communication. He studied Arabic Language and Culture at Radboud University Nijmegen and received his PhD from Nijmegen University in 1993. Douwes has lectured on the history of the Middle East at universities in Nijmegen and Leiden. From 1994 to 1998, he was the coordinator of the Indonesian-Netherlands Cooperation in Islamic Studies program at Leiden University. Since 1998, he has been the academic coordinator and executive director of the International Institute for the Study of Islam in the Modern World (ISIM), as well as the editor of the ISIM Review and ISIM Papers series. Douwes's research focuses on late Ottoman history, religious plurality in the Middle East, and the interactions between Muslims and Western Europe.
