Diederick (Rick) E. Grobbee is a trained medical doctor from Utrecht University. He conducted his PhD research in the field of hypertension at Erasmus University Rotterdam from December 1983 to June 1986. Following his residency in Internal Medicine, he returned to Erasmus University as an associate professor and subsequently became a full professor of Clinical Epidemiology in 1993. In Rotterdam, he was responsible for the cardiovascular disease research program at the Department of Epidemiology and was one of the founders of the Rotterdam Study. In 1996, he was appointed professor of Clinical Epidemiology at Utrecht University, where he founded the Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care, a division of the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU), which currently employs around 500 staff. In 2008, Rick Grobbee founded the Julius Center. His research groups focus on global cardiovascular health, aiming to study cardiovascular risk factors and health outcomes, as well as to develop, implement, and scale up cost-efficient approaches for primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease, promoting equity in cardiovascular health globally.
