Biography

Diego Arispe-Bazán is a linguistic and cultural anthropologist whose research centers on the production and circulation of history through linguistic and discursive strategies. He specifically focuses on the schisms and divides within communities’ valorizations of colonial pasts in Latin America, examining differences in dialectal Spanish forms that reaffirm ideas of national belonging framed within colonial, racial, and gender hierarchies. His ethnographic and semiotic research employs a fine-grained approach to understanding the composition of race and class categories in Latin America intertwined with colonial processes. Diego received his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania in 2018 and became a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Buffett Institute for Global Affairs, with affiliations to the Departments of Spanish & Portuguese and Anthropology. His research has been funded by the Wenner-Gren Foundation, and his teaching has been recognized by the Center for Teaching & Learning at the University of Pennsylvania and NAFSA: Association of International Educators. Diego's recent research project focuses on diasporic Andean indigenous communities in Europe, particularly queer indigenous subjects. His current book project, "Making History: Spanish Labor Migrants in 20th Century Lima," investigates migration's impact on shifts in the global economic system.
