Biography

Diego Rivera is a world-class musician, composer, arranger, and educator, who has captivated audiences for over 25 years with his muscular tone and compelling blend of straight-ahead jazz infused with music inspired by his Chicano heritage. Since 1999, Rivera has performed at premier venues and festivals in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. In addition to leading his own ensemble, he has toured internationally with a roster of renowned artists, including GRAMMY Award-winning vocalist Kurt Elling and JUNO Award-winner Sophie Milman. His extensive performance credits include collaborations with the Jazz Lincoln Center Orchestra under Wynton Marsalis, as well as performances with other notable musicians such as Christian McBride and Wycliffe Gordon. Rivera is also a recording artist with Posi-Tone Records, having released critically acclaimed albums as a bandleader and served as a sideman, composer, and arranger on numerous recordings. In 2022, he received one of twelve commissions from Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works, leading to the creation of "Ofrenda," a 10-movement suite inspired by the tradition of the ofrenda. As a passionate educator, Rivera has presented masterclasses at institutions across the U.S. and abroad, mentoring students who have gone on to perform with leading ensembles like the Jazz Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Count Basie Orchestra.
