Biography

Professor Dieter Saur is a gastroenterologist and oncologist focusing on novel approaches to target solid tumors with the aim of improving prognosis for cancer patients. His research team is dedicated to investigating tumor progression using genetically engineered models that simulate hallmark characteristics of human diseases. A key objective of his research is to achieve mechanistic insights on how tumor cells interact with their microenvironment to pave the way for the development of innovative therapeutic strategies. Professor Saur studied medicine at the Technical University of Munich, where he also obtained his doctorate specializing in neurogastroenterology. He completed his clinical training at TUM’s University Hospital rechts der Isar, becoming a specialist in internal medicine and gastroenterology in 2007. He was appointed as a senior physician lecturer the same year and became a full professor of Translational Cancer Research at the Institute of Experimental Cancer Therapy at TUM in 2017. He also leads the Division of Translational Cancer Research at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ).
