Dietmar Zehn is a professor in Animal Physiology and Immunology. His research focuses on CD8+ T cells, which are essential for natural immune protection against viral and bacterial infections, as well as malignant diseases. His laboratory works to unravel new molecular mechanisms and strategies to effectively engage T cells for prophylactic and therapeutic purposes, seeking to develop new treatment options for diseases affecting both humans and livestock. He also investigates the impact of immune cells on organ physiology and their contribution to pathophysiological processes, utilizing a combination of genomics, systems biology, cellular immunology, and molecular cell biology. Zehn studied medicine at Humboldt University of Berlin from 1996 to 2004 and spent five years as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Washington in Seattle. He joined the Immunology division at the University Hospital of Lausanne in 2009 and was appointed Assistant Professor the same year. In 2013, he received a sponsored professorship from the Swiss National Science Foundation and became a full professor at TUM in 2015, relocating his laboratory to the TUM campus Weihenstephan. He is also the founding director of the TUM Center for Infection Prevention (ZIP), which has secured EUR 42 million funding from the German Science Council for research infrastructure.
