Biography

Dima Kuzmin joined the Yale Faculty in 2021 as an Assistant Professor (Adjunct) at the School of Medicine. His academic career has primarily focused on tool development in central nervous system gene therapy. Dima played a key role in co-founding the field of chemogenetics, which involves controlling cells in the body through gene therapies activated by small molecule drugs. His research has been published in leading journals and is a significant part of the ongoing advancements in gene therapies aimed at clinical trials. During his postdoctoral fellowship at University College London, Dima worked on using optogenetics and chemogenetics to understand how information is processed in the brain, particularly the role of oscillations in transmission and encoding information, as well as constructing novel brain-computer interfaces. His ultimate goal is to discover and enable curative therapies for chronic diseases and make them accessible to the global population. His research interests focus on clinical trial design, post-registrational assessment, and the ethics of access to one-time curative therapies such as gene and cell therapy. Additionally, Dima is a Co-Founder and Managing Partner of 4BIO Capital, an international venture capital firm that is dedicated to advanced therapies. He also serves on the boards of various biotech companies and co-founded Future Biotech, a non-profit initiative aimed at nurturing future biotechnology entrepreneurs in Central and Eastern Europe.
