Biography

Dimitra Simeonidou is a Professor at the University of Bristol, where she serves as the Director of the Smart Internet Lab and is the Founding Director of the Bristol Digital Futures Institute. With extensive expertise in high-performance networks, programmable networks, the Future Internet, wireless-optical convergence, and 5G/6G smart city infrastructures, she leads transformative research that is increasingly focused on cross-disciplinary topics such as climate change and digital transformation in society and businesses. Dimitra is currently leading the 5G Open RAN pilots in Bristol City/Region and is a member of the UK Government Supply Chain Diversification Task Force Advisory Council. As a founding member of the UK Telecoms Innovation Network and a member of the OFCOM Spectrum Advisory Board, she plays a key role in shaping UK telecommunications strategies. In 2025, she will be appointed as the Chief Scientific Advisor for the European Commission. Dimitra has authored and co-authored over 700 publications and holds numerous patents. As a technical architect, she is also involved in developing solutions for connected smart infrastructures and has been recognized with fellowships from the Royal Academy of Engineering and IEEE.
