Dimitrios obtained a B.Sc. in Molecular Biology and Genetics from the Democritus University of Thrace, Greece. He pursued his PhD in Molecular Microbiology under the supervision of Professor Sanjib Bhakta from Birkbeck, University of London, and Professor Edith Sim from the University of Oxford, evaluating potential mycobacterial drug targets and antimycobacterial compounds. After completing his PhD, Dimitrios joined the Centre for Clinical Microbiology laboratory with Professor Timothy McHugh at University College London (UCL) as part of the European consortium, PreDiCT-TB. At UCL, he explored transcriptomic signatures of drug action in Mycobacterium tuberculosis to develop drug efficacy models and molecular biomarkers to quantify bacterial cells infected in tissues. He subsequently joined the Laboratory of Mycobacterial Metabolism and Antibiotic Research led by Dr. Luiz Carvalho at the newly formed Francis Crick Institute, investigating antimicrobial resistance mechanisms in tuberculosis through interdisciplinary approaches. His work involved drug discovery projects utilizing metabolomics to ascertain mechanisms of drug action. Dimitrios joined the Department of Microbial Diseases at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute in October 2019 as a Lecturer in Microbiology, planning to establish a research program focusing on antimicrobial resistance.
