Dimitrios Lignos is a Full Professor and Department Chair of Civil Engineering at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). He joined EPFL in 2016 after serving as a tenured Associate Professor at McGill University, Canada. Lignos has held postdoctoral positions at Stanford University and Kyoto University. He holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Structural Engineering from Stanford University and a 5-year Diploma in Civil Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). His research focuses on the understanding and modeling of extreme limit states of structural collapse, particularly in steel structures. He has contributed to the development of new design paradigms in seismic design through multiscale experimental testing and advanced computational modeling techniques. Lignos has received several prestigious awards including the 2022 Raymond Reese Research Prize and the 2019 Walter L. Huber Prize from the American Society of Civil Engineers. He is actively involved in standards development and serves as an editor for the journal Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics.
