Biography

Professor Ding-Xuan Zhou received his BSc and PhD degrees in Mathematics from Zhejiang University, China, in 1988 and 1991, respectively. He served as a Research Assistant Professor (1996-99), followed by various roles including Assistant Professor (1999-2000), Associate Professor (2001-05), and Professor (2005-09) at the City University of Hong Kong. His administrative roles included Head of the Department of Mathematics (2006-12) and Associate Dean of the School of Data Science (2018-22). In August 2022, he joined the University of Sydney as the Head of the School of Mathematics and Statistics. Professor Zhou's research aligns with the Faculty of Science's strengths in Complex Systems, Precision Digital Health, Data-Driven Decisions, and National Security. He specializes in learning theory, neural networks, wavelet analysis, and approximation theory, with a current focus on deep learning theory. With more than 100 research papers authored and over 40 research grants as Principal Investigator, he has supervised more than 20 PhD students and co-organized over 20 international conferences. Professor Zhou has been recognized as a Highly-Cited Researcher and ranked among the world's top 2% of scientists by Stanford University.
