Biography

Dipesh Chakrabarty holds a BSc (Physics honors) degree from Presidency College, University of Calcutta, a postgraduate Diploma in management from the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta, and a PhD in history from the Australian National University. He is currently the Lawrence Kimpton Distinguished Service Professor in the History and South Asian Languages and Civilizations College at the University of Chicago. He is a faculty fellow at the Chicago Center for Contemporary Theory and has courtesy appointments at the Law School. Chakrabarty is also a founding member of the editorial collective of Subaltern Studies and has served on the editorial boards of the American Historical Review and Public Culture. His research interests include modern South Asian history, historiography, postcolonial studies, globalization, and the effects of climate change on human history. His influential works include "Provincializing Europe" and "Rethinking Working-Class History." He has received several honors, including the Prix Européen de l’Essai and honorary doctorates from multiple institutions. Chakrabarty has held numerous visiting professorships, including at Max Planck Institute for Historical Sciences and University of Melbourne.
