Biography

Dirk Lund Christensen is an Associate Professor at the Global Health Section of the University of Copenhagen, specializing in cardio-metabolic diseases and exposure variables such as physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness, high fat diet, and low birth weight. He has examined the relationship between extreme physical activity exposure and potential damage to key organs such as the heart and kidneys. His research primarily focuses on utilizing methodological tools for diagnosing cardio-metabolic diseases in diverse populations, particularly within non-European and European diaspora contexts. Dirk holds an MSc in human physiology, an MA in African Studies, and a PhD in diabetes epidemiology, all obtained from the University of Copenhagen. His research addresses diabetes risk factors in various populations, including an investigation of elite runners and studies related to physical activity risk factors in low- and middle-income countries—specifically targeting populations such as the Tarahumara Indians in Mexico and low birth weight individuals in India. His ongoing research involves the relationship between high fat intake and cardio-metabolic risk in East African Maasai, and the association of diabetes and tuberculosis in Pakistan. Dirk has also been involved in examining the impact of micronutrient intake on cardio-metabolic risk among Australian Aboriginals and the effects of placental malaria exposure on early adulthood risks in Tanzania.
