Dirk Fahland is an Associate Professor in the Process Analytics Multi-Dimensional Event Data Analytics Information Systems group at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). With a strong foundational background in constructing analysis of distributed systems and formal models, he has dedicated years to embracing event data as a central source for system analysis. His research primarily focuses on describing and analyzing complex distributed systems and processes using process mining and data engineering methodologies. The central theme of Dirk’s research addresses the analysis of data systems, particularly large and complex ones, traditionally understood as monolithic end-to-end processes executed in isolation. His approach involves analyzing and describing these systems through a complex network of behavioral angles. To achieve his goals, he investigates techniques for large-scale event data pre-processing, querying, discovering, synthesizing, and transforming models based on existing event data frameworks. The complexity inherent in understanding these systems deeply fascinates him, and he strives to develop useful concepts that facilitate structured thinking and deep comprehension of this complexity in various systems. Dirk earned his PhD from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin under the supervision of Prof. Wolfgang Reisig and Prof. Wil van der Aalst. He has held a Post-Doc position at TU/e as part of the EU-funded ACSI project, alongside research experiences at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and HPI Potsdam in Germany. He also spent a year at the National University of Singapore's School of Computing. Dirk was appointed Assistant Professor in 2013 and received tenure in 2016, becoming an Associate Professor in 2019. He manages the 'Data Science Engineering' Master's program and oversees the 'Data Challenge' course series at JADS, as well as the 'Process Mining Logistics' project with Vanderlande Industries.
