Biography

Dirk Hackbarth is a Professor of Finance at Boston University Questrom School of Business. He holds a PhD and MS in Finance from the Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley; an MSc in Economics from the London School of Economics; and a Diplom in Business Economics from the University of Cologne. Dirk teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses in corporate finance and is recognized as a distinguished scholar in the field. His research primarily focuses on bankruptcy, capital structure, corporate governance, law and finance, mergers and acquisitions, product markets, real options, and valuation. He has delivered over 150 invited talks at top-tier conferences and annual meetings of the American, European, and Western Finance Associations, among others. His work has been published in several leading journals, including the Journal of Finance and the Journal of Financial Economics, and has received awards for his conference publications. Dirk has held various positions, including Faculty Fellow and Associate Professor of Finance (tenured in 2008) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and has been a visiting scholar at numerous prestigious institutions, including the Bonn Graduate School of Economics and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before entering academia, Dirk worked in finance at Bain, DZ Bank, and Union Bank of Switzerland.
