Prof. Dirk Heckmann conducts research in interface law with a particular emphasis on data protection law, security law, e-government, and legal informatics. His work has been instrumental in shaping the legal perspective on placing individual interests at the heart of societal considerations amidst digital change. Prof. Heckmann studied law and completed his legal clerkship in Trier. He earned his doctoral degree as well as his postdoctoral qualification (habilitation) from the University of Freiburg. Since 2003, he has served part-time as a constitutional judge on the Bavarian Constitutional Court. He is also a member of the Ethics Committee at the Federal Ministry of Transport and has focused on autonomous connected driving as well as data ethics within the federal government. Additionally, he serves as a consumer ambassador at the Bavarian Center for Digitalization and is the director of the Bavarian Hub for Digital Transformation (bidt).
