Diyendo Massilani began his scientific journey studying the chemical composition of local medicinal herbs in the laboratory of Pharmacology and Ethnology at the University of Health Sciences in Gabon under the supervision of Professor Blandine Akendengué. He obtained a Technical Degree in Medical Sciences in 2007 and pursued further studies at Sorbonne University in Paris, receiving his Bachelor of Life Sciences in 2010 and Master of Molecular and Cellular Biology with a specialty in Genetics in 2012. Subsequently, he worked in the Epigenomics Palaeogenomics lab of the Jacques Monod Institute in Paris, optimizing methods for ancient DNA extraction and Next Generation Sequencing, while researching Bovid evolution and cattle domestication, culminating in a PhD in Genomics in 2016 from Paris Cité University. In 2017, he joined the Evolutionary Genetics department at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, working on archaic and early modern human population history. Since July 2022, he has been an Assistant Professor at the Yale Department of Genetics, where his lab investigates the evolutionary history of modern and extinct human populations using ancient DNA.
