Doina Cretu is an Assistant Professor of Modern European History at the University of Warwick, UK. Her research focuses on the history of humanitarianism, development, and migration, particularly concerning the experiences of refugees in East-Central Europe. Her forthcoming monograph, Foreign Aid State Building Interwar Romania: Quest Ideal, published by Stanford University Press in 2024, investigates the interplay between national agendas and international humanitarianism in Romania during the interwar period. Cretu's ongoing projects examine the evolution of the modern refugee regime in the context of Austria-Hungary's policies during and after World War I, featuring the interplay of state governance, humanitarian mobilization, and refugee subjectivities. In addition to her research, Cretu is co-editing a volume entitled Humanitarian Mobilisation East-Central Europe: Local, National, International Perspectives, to be released by Manchester University Press in 2025. She has held previous academic positions including Visiting Lecturer at the University of Vienna and a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the European University Institute in Florence.
