Dr. Domietta Torlasco

Biography

Domietta Torlasco is a critical theorist and filmmaker. She is a core faculty member in the Comparative Literary Studies Program and holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of Radio/Television/Film. Torlasco graduated in Semiotics from the University of Bologna and received her doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley. She also completed an MFA in Film, Video, and New Media at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Between 2003 and 2007, she served as a Harper-Schmidt Fellow and Collegiate Assistant Professor in the Humanities at the University of Chicago. Her research and teaching interests encompass critical theory, psychoanalysis, phenomenology, feminist and queer theory, and Italian and French cinema, as well as science fiction and noir film literature. Torlasco is the author of several books, including 'Time Crime: Phenomenology, Psychoanalysis, Italian Film' (Stanford University Press, 2008), 'Heretical Archive: Digital Memory and Film' (University of Minnesota Press, 2013), and 'Rhythm Images: Cinema Measure' (University of Minnesota Press, 2021). Her articles have appeared in journals such as Camera Obscura and Discourse. Currently, she is completing a book that comprises critical essays and outlines for film scripts, titled 'Life: Essay Memory, Matter, Race.'
