Domingo J. Piñero joined the faculty of the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, Public Health in August 2002 and became the Director of the Undergraduate Program in 2008. He earned his B.S. in Nutrition from Universidad Central de Venezuela in 1986, his M.S. in Nutrition from Universidad Simón Bolívar, Venezuela in 1991, and his Ph.D. in Nutrition with a minor in Demography from Pennsylvania State University in 1998. From 1998 to 2002, he served as a Research Assistant Professor at G.M. Leader Family Laboratory for Alzheimer's Disease Research in the Neuroscience Department of the Penn State College of Medicine. Dr. Piñero's research interests include pediatric nutrition, particularly in relation to Latinos, with a focus on pediatric obesity and the effects of iron nutrition on cognitive development. He is particularly interested in multidisciplinary approaches to solving early life nutritional problems, and his current research emphasizes the prevention of childhood and adolescent obesity within the Latino community. Dr. Piñero received the New York University Research Challenge Fund Award in 2004 for his work on pediatric obesity prevention in collaboration with Bellevue Hospital, and he was honored with the 2007 Teaching Excellence Award from the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University. He is currently involved in the BODY (Banishing Obesity Diabetes Children) project, which targets obese children in the NYC public schools.
