Biography

Dominic Brewer is a labor economist specializing in economics of education and education policy. He is the Dean Emeritus of the Steinhardt School and holds an appointment in the Department of Applied Statistics, Social Science, and Humanities. Brewer is the author of numerous books and articles on a broad range of education issues, including K–12 and higher education. His work includes empirical analyses of the effects of teachers on student achievement, class size, charter schools, and competition in higher education, with notable publications such as "Pursuit of Prestige" (2001). He serves as co-editor of a major journal, Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, and has been president of the Association for Education Finance and Policy. Brewer has gained recognition as a fellow of the American Educational Research Association, elected in 2011. Before his current role, he served as the Clifford H. and Betty C. Allen Professor of Urban Leadership at the University of Southern California's Rossier School of Education and had a notable tenure at the RAND Corporation, where he rose to the position of vice president by 2004. He earned his BA in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics with first-class honors from Oxford University, his MA in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and his PhD in Labor Economics from Cornell University.
