Dr. Dominic Furniss

Biography

Dominic Furniss is a Professor of Plastic Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Oxford's Medical Sciences Division. He undertook his undergraduate medical training at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated with a class degree in genetic pathology. Later, he moved to Christ Church, Oxford, to continue his studies in clinical medicine at the Oxford University Clinical School. After graduation, he completed basic surgical training in London and returned to the Oxford Plastic Surgery Department in 2003. In 2004, he began a year of research towards a D.M. degree focused on investigating the molecular genetics of congenital limb malformations under the guidance of Professor Andrew Wilkie at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics. He won the Pushpa Chopra Award Plenary Prize at the MRS for his work. In 2007, he was appointed as an NIHR Clinical Lecturer, which allowed him to research the molecular genetics of Dupuytren's Disease while continuing his training as a specialist registrar in plastic reconstructive surgery. In 2012, he received the prestigious Wellcome Trust Intermediate Fellowship, a first for a plastic surgeon, and began his research at the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences. His research interests have since diversified to investigate both genetic and non-genetic causes of common hand surgery conditions, with clinical interests in hand surgery, supermicrosurgery, and the treatment of lymphoedema.
