Biography

Dominic Furniss is a Professor of Plastic Reconstructive Surgery at the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences at the University of Oxford. He undertook his medical education at Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating with a class degree in medicine. Following this, he moved to Christ Church, Oxford to study clinical medicine at the Oxford University Clinical School. After graduation, he completed his basic surgical training in London and returned to the Oxford Plastic Surgery Department in 2003. He began his D.M. research degree in 2004, investigating the molecular genetics of congenital limb malformations under the guidance of Professor Andrew Wilkie, receiving several awards for his research. In 2007, he was appointed as an NIHR Clinical Lecturer, which allowed him to research the molecular genetics of Dupuytren's Disease while continuing his training in plastic reconstructive surgery. In 2012, he was awarded the prestigious Wellcome Trust Intermediate Fellowship, making him the first plastic surgeon to receive this award. His research interests have expanded to include both genetic and non-genetic causes of common hand surgery conditions, particularly focusing on hand surgery and supermicrosurgery for lymphoedema.
