Biography

Professor Fischer is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specializing in the treatment of retinal diseases. He received his undergraduate training in Munich, Melbourne, and Zurich, and completed his clinical research at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Tübingen. In 2012, he became a member of the medical faculty at Eberhard Karl University Tübingen, and in 2015 he was appointed Professor of Ophthalmology at the Centre for Ophthalmology in Tübingen. In 2020, while offered a Chair in Ophthalmology at Justus Liebig University Giessen, he returned to the University of Oxford. Professor Fischer has received over 25 awards, including the Leonhard Klein Award for his advancement in vitreoretinal surgery and the Senator-Hermann-Wacker Award for his scientific contributions in the field of retinal and choroidal diseases. With more than 100 invited lectures and authorship of over 70 peer-reviewed articles, he also advises patient advocacy groups and the biotech and pharmaceutical industry, serving as an expert advisor to the European Medicines Agency and acting as an editor for scientific journals. His ongoing research addresses blinding disorders and aims at developing treatment options for various visual system conditions.
